Don’t make these mistakes!

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), also known as tapping, is a powerful self-help tool combining ancient acupressure and modern psychology elements. For beginners, EFT can seem both exciting and overwhelming. I always reassure clients that although it may feel weird at first the benefits soon outweigh this.

To help you get the most out of your practice, I’ve outlined the top five mistakes to avoid when tapping, ensuring your journey toward emotional and physical well-being is smooth and most importantly, effective.

EFT Mistake

1. Skipping the Setup Statement

The setup statement is a critical part of the EFT process. It involves acknowledging the issue you want to address while affirming self-acceptance. For example:

“Even though I feel [insert issue], I completely accept myself.”

Many beginners skip this step, thinking it’s unnecessary, awkward or not fully understanding the importance of meeting yourself where you are. The setup statement primes your mind to work through the emotional block effectively, without it, your tapping sessions may feel less impactful. Take your time crafting a meaningful statement before you begin tapping.

2. Being Vague About the Issue

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is not being specific about the issue they’re addressing. Instead of saying, “I feel stressed,” identify what’s causing your stress. For example:

“I feel stressed about my upcoming work deadline.”

The more precise you are, the more targeted and effective your EFT session will be. If you’re unsure where to start, focus on recent events or strong emotions related to the issue.

3. Tapping Too Quickly

Tapping is not a race! Beginners often rush through the tapping points, hoping to get quick results. However, tapping too quickly can make the process less effective. Slow down and focus on each point, taking deep breaths and staying present with the emotion or sensation you’re addressing. EFT works best when you tap gently and deliberately.

4. Ignoring Physical Sensations

EFT is as much about the body as it is about the mind. Many beginners focus solely on the emotional aspect, ignoring physical sensations tied to their issue. For instance, if you’re feeling anxious, note where that anxiety shows up in your body—perhaps a tight chest or a knot in your stomach. Acknowledge these sensations during your tapping session to create a more holistic healing experience.

5. Giving Up Too Soon

Results from EFT can be immediate, but for many, it takes consistent practice to experience significant changes. Beginners often give up after one or two sessions, thinking it doesn’t work. Remember, emotional and physical healing can be a process. Stick with it, and don’t be afraid to repeat sessions on the same issue or explore new ones.

Tips for Successful EFT Practice

  • Create a Calm Environment: Find a quiet, distraction-free space where you can fully focus on your tapping session.
  • Journal Your Progress: Keep a record of your issues and any shifts you notice during and after tapping.
  • Seek Guidance: If you feel stuck, consider working with a certified EFT practitioner who can help you refine your technique. I have a few that I can highly recommend, check them out here: https://theintegritymethod.org/directory/
