How EFT can calm the ADHD brain.

Introduction

Living with ADHD can feel like riding a rollercoaster with no seatbelt. The constant mental chatter, impulsivity, and difficulty focusing can turn everyday tasks into mega challenges. But what if there were a way to calm the storm and regain control? Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), a powerful tool that can offer support and relief for those navigating life with ADHD.

What is EFT?

EFT, often referred to as “tapping,” is a form of psychological acupressure but I also refer to it as a psychological massage! It involves tapping on specific meridian points on the body while focusing on particular issues or emotions. This practice aims to reduce stress and promote emotional well-being, making it a natural fit for managing ADHD symptoms. Myself, my clients, my children all know the benefits of EFT and why it should be in your toolkit.

How Can EFT Help with ADHD?

  1. Reduces Stress and Anxiety For many people with ADHD, stress and anxiety are constant companions. The pressures of trying to stay organised, meet deadlines, and manage relationships can be overwhelming. EFT has been shown to significantly reduce cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress. By tapping away stress, individuals with ADHD can experience a calmer mind, which in turn can improve focus and reduce overwhelm.
  2. Improves Focus and Concentration One of the core challenges of ADHD is maintaining attention. EFT helps by calming the nervous system and reducing the mental noise that often distracts individuals. With regular tapping, the mind becomes more tranquil, making it easier to stay on task and complete projects without succumbing to distraction.
  3. Enhances Emotional Regulation Emotional dysregulation is a common issue for those with ADHD. The intense emotional responses and mood swings can be hard to manage. EFT provides a way to process and release these emotions safely and effectively. By tapping through feelings of frustration, anger, or sadness, individuals can achieve a more balanced emotional state, leading to better relationships and improved self-esteem.
  4. Boosts Self-Esteem and Confidence Many people with ADHD struggle with feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem, often due to years of criticism and misunderstanding. EFT allows individuals to address and reframe these negative beliefs, replacing them with positive affirmations. This shift can lead to increased confidence and a more positive self-image, empowering individuals to pursue their goals with renewed focus.

Getting Started with EFT

EFT is accessible and can be practiced anywhere, anytime. Here’s a simple way to start:

  1. Identify the Issue: Focus on a specific problem or emotion you want to address.
  2. Set Up: Tap the side of the hand while repeating a setup statement like, “Even though I feel overwhelmed, I completely accept myself.”
  3. Sequence: Tap on the following points while focusing on the issue: top of the head, eyebrow, side of the eye, under the eye, under the nose, chin, collarbone, and under the arm. Repeat the sequence as needed.
